This article presents information on some recent socio-political developments. It is informed that the Secretary of the Treasury has issued a notice that on July 1, 1881, the government would pay the principal and interest of the dollar 195,690,400, 6 percent of the bonds which are due at that date. This particular notice was accompanied by an offer of the Treasury to the holders of these bonds to extend them at the rate of three and half percent annual interest as long as the government finds it convenient to have them run. This extension will be granted only on the application of the holder of the bonds, and the applications are to be filed before May 10. In another political development, it was stressed to look into the constitutional provisions for the protection of the minority, such as the clauses maintaining the integrity of the small states, etc.
