It was quite as much the reputation of the head master, Edwin A. Abbott, as the fame of the school itself which led the author to Milk Street, off Cheapside, the heart of the city, to witness the annual distribution of prizes at the "City of London School." There had been some mistake about cards, and for a moment it seemed as if the author and other people should not gain an admittance; but that ready courtesy with which the English, especially in London, respond to any intelligent interest in the things which are their pride, made all smooth, and the author and other people soon found themselves on the upper bench of a semicircular hail or theatre.
