The article discusses various political and social developments. The explanations and complaints which have been called forth from a large and influential portion of the Republican press by the very disappointing result of the election in Maine, have given fresh interest to the subject. Senator Roscoe Conkling has delivered his campaign speech, probably the only one he will make in support of the Republican ticket. Parliament has been prorogued, and the two Houses have separated on the brink of a quarrel which will probably he appeased as the roll-months bring round February, which is the usual time of their meeting.
