With great increase in the number of works and widening of the field of literature, a complete review of the literary history of the present day is increasingly becoming difficult. Of 1880 it must be said, as of the years immediately preceding it, that while there have been produced many works in all departments of literature, there have been none which deserve to be placed in the front rank. There have been histories, poems, novels, and dramas in great numbers, hut none which seemed destined to be read by the next generation. Neither in theology nor science have there been works which mark an era in their progress. The knowledge of the earth has received no distinct addition through any great work of travels.
