The article focuses on the book "Christian History in Its Three Great Periods," by J.H. Allen. These three periods are Early Christianity, The Middle Age and Modern Phases. Other religions have taught as earnestly as Christianity the terrors of the hereafter for the sinner and the final bliss of the righteous. The eschatologies of Egypt, Iran, India, Islam are as rich as, or perhaps richer than, that of Christendom, but they all place the future fate of the individual in his own hands. Christianity alone dared not only to make its sacred class mediators between man and God, but to clothe them with such portion of the divine power that they controlled the destiny of every believing soul.
