The 55th Annual Exhibition of National Academy of Design presents remarkable portraits. One of the painting portrays the head and shoulders of a young girl, with brown hair, grey-blue eyes, and fair complexion, clad in light summer attire, the white waist disclosing the neck and arms under a thin haze of muslin. It is a portrait of simplicity itself, the suggestion of the face and figure being carried out in the details with a consistency which one scarcely knows whether to call a caressing subtlety or an almost objective directness.
