The article discusses the book "A Ride in Egypt, From Sioot to Luxor, in 1879," by W.J. Loftie. The book also contains notes on the present state and ancient history of the Nile valley, and some account of the various ways of making the voyage out and home. The sketches of the book are not the result of one ride through central and upper Egypt, but "of three visits to the Nile valley, comprising in all about fifteen months' residence"; and, in fact, also--as the contents show--of previous studies on the subject. Loftie is an enthusiastic admirer of ancient Egypt, as revealed in its monuments, but detests modern Egypt, as he found it in the reign of Egyptian ruler Ismail Pasha, before whose deposition the book was prepared for the press.
