The novels of Denis Diderot, encyclopediast and philosopher are more often read now than the Encyclopedia but, in the eyes of his contemporaries, Diderot was eminently the author of the "Encyclopedia." The history of this great publication has been recently told by Maurice Tourneux. It had been quite forgotten, as well as the "Encyclopedia," itself who thinks now of buying the huge volumes which are hidden in some old bookseller's shop on the Quasi Voltaire. Diderot could not be consoled for the mutilalion of the "Encyclopedia."
