Although in some parts of Switzerland the natives complain that there are more hotels and stores and fewer visitors, every season, other places seem to have been more frequented this year than ever before. Especially this is true of localities which have become summer colonies, as it were, of Germany, France, Italy, or England. Switzerland, notoriously, consists of three national divisions, in which the language, customs, and names of towns and mountains are respectively German, French, and Italian. It must be admitted that the noonday color symphonies, the emerald lakes, the varied green of the forests, the brilliant colors of alpine flowers, the spotless white of the vast snow fields, and the deep blue of the celestial dome, contrasting with the gray monotony and grotesque wildness of the savage rocks are more than a compensation for the rarity of gorgeous sunsets.
