The article focuses on the book "Report of an Archæological Tour in Mexico in 1881," by A.F. Bandelier. In this book, Bandelier has given results of a trip which he made to Mexico in 1881, under the auspices of the Archæological Institute of America. Although his visit was made in the interests of archaæology, Bandelier did not go, as do so many of the "practical" explorers, spade in hand on a wild hunt after curiosities, but rather as a trained and careful observer, whose object it was to see these remains precisely as they are, and to interpret, as far as may be, the story which they have to tell.
