The article focuses on efforts to establish peace in the Palestinian refugee tragedy. An Israeli who fought as a youth in the 1949 War of Independence is now in his mid-60s, gliding toward 70. Some of the Israelis who fought in that war knew that something horrible was happening. During the fighting houses were damaged and civilians fled from the battlefield. But that was only the beginning. Near the end Palestinian villagers were told, for their own good, to leave immediately and cross the border. After the war, in the early years of the new state, around 400 Palestinian villages were scientifically obliterated until no trace remained of what had once been people's homes.
