Abstract

The English in Egypt on the English in England

The article presents the author's views on Englishmen residing in Egypt. According to the author there is a wonderful amount of practical unanimity among the Englishmen in Egypt. This unanimity is not confined to the merchants at Alexandria, whose clear and absorbing commercial interests might naturally lead them all to think one way; but in the Cairo world, where all the conflicting tendencies of English political life are fairly represented and there is to be found only a trifling divergency of view. It is very rare to meet any one who would favor the instant annexation of Egypt; and it is equally rare to meet any one who does not invoke the most absolute and authoritative influence of England in all Egyptian affairs, or who would, even in imagination, fix any limit of time at which that influence ought to be withdrawn.
