Abstract

Massachusetts Republicanism

The article discusses the Republican nomination of Oliver Ames for Governor in Massachusetts which is an impressive sign of the demoralization of the party. Mr. Ames is a man of amiable disposition, and respected by the community but he is devoid of those qualities of mind which, in Massachusetts have always been deemed essential in the aspirant after high office. He lacks the capacity to make a presentable appearance on public occasions; and his failures when, as Lieutenant Governor, he has represented the State at such times, have been almost pitiable. The prominence of Mr. Ames in the canvass for the Republican candidacy in a State having the tradition of Massachusetts, is the most alarming symptom of a disease which seems to have secured a death-hold upon the party.
