The article presents information on various social and political developments in the United States. Speaker John Carlisle's address to the Boston Democrats at the dinner of the Bay State Club on Saturday was a vigorous plea for State rights. Explicitly disclaiming any belief in secession or nullification, he enforced the necessity of maintaining States' rights in the proper sense against the present tendency toward centralization and a dangerous aggrandizement of the Federal Government. The non-union printers have started an organization, which is intended to give those who do not care to surrender their individual judgment in the control of their lives, all the benefits in the way of assistance and protection which the unions now give their members, without robbing them of their freedom, and without placing them in an attitude of hostility to the rest of the community.
