This article focuses on the conference of American Library Association held in 1891 in San Francisco, California. The attendance was less than half as great, consequently there was less rush, less of the enthusiasm of a crowd, the meetings, though a little unpunctual, were very orderly. The visiting librarians can understand how great mechanical improvements can be made, but as the chief expense in cataloguing is not for mechanical, but for intellectual work, they do not see how such saving is possible. One announcement of extreme importance was made at this conference. An "American Bibliography of the Nineteenth Century," will be prepared, with suitable details of every book published in the U.S. from 1800 to 1890.
