Abstract

Argentine Farming

Since the disastrous close of the era of speculation in Argentina, a great amount of attention has been given to the legitimate development of the country. The actual condition of the farming interest in Argentina is hard to get at, so conflicting is the evidence both as to the development and the profits of agriculture there. One branch of the agricultural export trade of Argentina has proved highly disappointing to those engaged in it. It is the shipment of cattle and sheep to Europe. This was taken up with great enthusiasm a few years ago, partly under the promise of a Government guarantee of interest on the capital invested, and partly on the basis of the great success of the business of shipping frozen mutton to England from Australia and New Zealand.
