This article discusses several books on fiction. Some of the books are "In the Valley," by Harold Frederic, "Colonel Carter of Cartersville," by F. Hopkinson, "Mine Own People," by Rudyard Kipling, "Stories of Old New Spain," by Thomas A. Janvier, Fourteen to One," by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, and others. The book by Hopkinson is a clever and engaging little volume, describing, with a touch both humorous and loving, an unreconstructed Virginia gentleman and the friends he endeared himself to, from his lawyer to his colored servant.
