This article presents information on the book "The Silva of North America; a Description of the Trees Which Grow Naturally in North America, Exclusive of Mexico," by Charles Sprague Sargent. It is informed that professor Sargent was charged with the task of making a report on the forests of North America for the tenth census. To do this he visited all portions of the country, collecting specimens of all the trees he could find-- leaves, flowers, fruit, wood, and bark-- making notes on their habit, distribution, uses, cultivation, abundance, and destruction. He also availed himself of the observations and collections made by many able assistants and correspondents. His report forms the ninth volume of the final report on the tenth census. He found not less than four hundred and twelve different kinds of woody plants which attain the dignity of trees.
