This article presents information on the Force bill. It is informed that by the votes of eight Republican senators who united with the Democrats, the Force bill was set aside in the Senate. It is opined that the shelving of the measure is universally regarded as equivalent to its rejection. It is informed that the shelving of the Force bill was seen as a major jolt to the Republican party, as the party was primarily organized to resist the aggression of slavery. From 1856 to 1888 the Republican party continued a political organization primarily devoted to issues growing out of slavery. For the first half of the period it really had a "mission." Before the war it was necessary to restrict the progress of slavery. When, through the war, slavery had been abolished, it remained to pass the constitutional amendments which made the black man the equal of the white before the laws of the land.
