The article critically apprises the book "The Devil's Picture-Books," by John King Van. The book is about history of playing cards. By accepting the book as an uncritical compilation, it is not without interest and not a few of its illustrations really add to information. The illustration shows that the device of sinking a figure or an initial in the corner pip of a card, which might be supposed to be the latest form of the so called index is in reality a century old. The book has three full page colored plates reproducing some twoscore of this rude gambling tool.
