The article reports on political development in the U.S. The Speaker of the House has talked about the recent disaster of the Republican party. The Speaker himself has led the majority in the House and guaranteed the success of the McKinley Bill. It must have been known to the speaker that the McKinley Bill would increase prices. There is no occult virtue in a tariff. Its mere existence on paper does not benefit the community. It has to be an opus operans, that is, a tariff that works by enabling good U.S. citizens who have things to sell to get more for them than they would get if there were no tariff.
