This article discusses about two books "Labor," and "Toil." The book "Labor," has been written by Lyof Tolstoi and translated by Mary Cruger, while the book "Toil," has been written by Leo Tolstoi and Timothy Bondareff, and translated by James F. Alvord. The translations were made from the same French original. Cruger's is the more easily read, the more flowing. Alvord's is angular, awkward, and inelegant, but keeps closer to the text, and retains phrases which Cruger has omitted. Alvord's translation is also to be commended because it omits from both cover and title page the false statement that the book has been or is "suppressed" or "interdicted by the Czar of Russia"
