This article presents information regarding books due for publishing in the year 1893. The thirty-fourth volume of Sidney Lee's "Dictionary of National Biography," invades the letter M, and gives us Macaulay and his philanthropic father, Zachary Macaulay, from the pen of Leslie Stephen. The ex-editor further enriches this installment with ten pages on John Locke, in which one misses any reference to Locke's influence on the author of "Emile," together with articles on Lockhart and Bulwer Lytton, all pithy and not rarely humorous. Sir M.E. Grant Duff's "Ernest Renan" gives a minimum of personal reminiscence, based upon a warm friendship of thirty years' standing with the Frenchman, and a maximum of elaborate analysis, done with no special competence, of his books.
