The article focuses on the book "The Spanish Pioneers," by Charles F. Lummis. The book describes the heroism of the conquerors, the self-devotion of the missionaries, and the wisdom of the regulations of the Spanish authorities for the protection of the Indian and his elevation in the scale of humanity. The conquest of all this region was attended with more or less bloodshed, but when once the question of supremacy was settled, the men of "sword and cape," as Bandeber styles them, gradually gave way to farmers and mechanics, and the Spanish government entered upon that course of legislation which, so far as the Indian is concerned, has resulted in elevating him to the highest position has yet attained in the scale of progress.
