This article presents information on the book "The Dawn of Italian Independence," by William Roscoe Thayer. The writer strictly limits his field to a period closing with the fall of Venice in 1849. The work is very conveniently divided into five books and is well indexed. Thayer gives just values to feudalism, paganism, and Christianity as factors in the evolution of the Middle Ages. His summary of Christianity and of its successive compromises with the ancient world is well done and very much his own. One may differ from the writer on points of detail. Reader thinks that he misses the answer as to why, after the fall of the Western Empire, Italy did not rise as a nation.
