The article presents an overview of the book "Woman Under Monasticism : Chapters on Saint-lore and Convent Life Between A. D. 500 and A. D. 1500," written by Lina Eckenstein. The book is the development and history of monastic life among German and English women only that is depicted, it is to be hoped that the subject will also he taken up as it concerns the women of Italy and France, where documentary evidence is still more abundant. This story begins, for the sake of completeness, with the position of women among the pre-Christian Germans.
