The article discusses Arabic literature. Arabic lexicons are remarkable for being voluminous and incomplete; indeed, it would almost seem as though their incompleteness were in direct ratio to the size and number of the volumes. The death of lexicographer B.W. Lane, prevented the finishing of his great lexicon columned quarto pages. Yet Lane limited himself to purely classical Arabic, and the significations to be found in his work are such as were in use only during the first two centuries after Prophet Mohammed's death.
