There is no question that the Persian Gulf conflict had a devastating impact on the American peace movement. Not only did the movement fail to stop a horrific and unnecessary war but it was portrayed by the media as a powerless anachronism that had fallen out of step with the new American jingoism. The peace movement labored under some self-imposed liabilities. These included its failure, over the past twenty years, to educate the grass roots about the political realities of the Middle East and about the U.S. role there of sustaining unjust and unstable systems of power.
