Stalinism With an Iron Fist

The article presents information on Romania and its leader Nicolae Ceausescu. Romania under Ceausescu is not merely isolated, it is regarded with almost universal hostility. Ceausescu has responded with xenophobia. Like dictator Joseph Stalin in the 1930s, Ceausescu has no intention of allowing former comrades who now disagree with him to form a separate faction within the Communist Party. Instead, he responds to their dissidence by accusing them of constituting a gang of agents in the service of foreign powers. There is, admittedly, one crucial difference: Ceausescu has not, at least so far, executed his adversaries.
