The article reviews the biographical book on the Cuban president Fidel Castro, "Fidel: A Critical Portrait." The book with 703 pages with a numbing lack of drama and a rather more surprising dearth of original information. On the major episodes such as the Bay of Pigs invasion, the disappearance of Che Guevara or the 1962 Missile Crisis, the book hardly furnishes any new information. Similarly, most of the biographical material on Castro's early life is drawn from other sources. Tad Szulc's (author of the book) characterizations of other figures, even when they are people of substance, is oddly trite: Che Guevara is "the mystical Argentine," Gabriel Garcia Marquez "the mustachioed Colombian Nobel Prize laureate."
