This article presents information on the film "Ballad of the Little Soldier." The film directed by Werner Herzog captures the plight of Miskito Indians in Nicaragua. The said film was canned in five weeks in the spring of 1984 at a Miskito village inside Nicaragua and at refugee and contra training camps in Honduras. Herzog's argument centers around alleged atrocities by Sandinista forces against Miskitos living at the Honduran border along the Rio Coco in late 1981; according to the film this period marked the beginning of a Sandinista policy of Indian extermination. The reality is far more complex, although the Sandinistas have admitted to serious abuses and violence against Miskitos by their army in 1981 and 1982.
