The article focuses on several books. Some of them are: "Marcus Alonzo Hanna: His Life and Work," by Herbert Croly; "The Making of Western Europe: The Dark Ages" by C.R.L. Fletcher; "American Colonial Government, 1696-1765," by Oliver Morton Dickerson. The first book lies less in the subject than in the author Croly, that is to say, acting as official biographer, sets out to give the true Mark Hanna, to revise current judgments of him, to clear away misunderstandings, and to arrive at a dispassionate appraisal of the man, always proposing to himself a certain ideal conception of him. His concluding chapter is a long and, no doubt, conscientious effort to explain and, to a degree, glorify Hanna as a pioneer.
