Abstract

Will Labor Lead?

West, George P. | April 19, 1919 issue

This article discusses the state of labor movement in the U.S. as of April 19, 1919. The direction of the labor forces will become apparent in June 1919 when the American Federation of Labor holds its annual convention at Atlantic City. Curiously enough, the Labor party movement within the Federation is less political, in the invidious meaning of the word, than the Federation leadership. There is no thirst for public office among its leaders and little taste for the indirections and compromise of politics. It is not too much to say that the leadership of the American labor movement has passed from Mr. Samuel Gompers and his little group of ultra-conservatives at Washington.
