Up to the present time modern Spanish literature has been totally unknown in this country. The United States received the latest literary news from Scandinavia, Russia, Germany, and France, but of Spanish letters no one knew anything. Americans frequently exaggerate their own commercialism. So far in the present century, Spanish novelists have ably continued the splendid tradition that descended to then from the dawn of romanticism. And, by good fortune, quality has been joined to quantity. The strange thing is that, in an era of diffusion of tongues, they have not a wider reputation. One of the characteristics of Spain as conceived by outsiders is picture squeness. It is significant what an easy road contemporary Spanish painters have found into other countries.
