A National Department of Education

The proposal to create a national Department of Education with a Secretary of equal rank with the Secretary of Commerce or the Secretary of Agriculture, and entitled to a seat in the President's Cabinet, is not a new one in the U.S. The proposal, however, has taken on new significance as a result of the radical change in the international policies during the last three years. A nation which deliberately sought international isolation had little need for a national representative of education. The national Government gave liberally for colleges of agriculture and mechanic arts, but it has had no way of making sure that the money was used for the purpose for which it was given.
