The article gives information on the book "The Religion of the Samurai: A Study of Zen Philosophy and Discipline in China and Japan," by Kaiten Nukariya. If the title of this interesting treatise implies that the Zen form of Buddhism was in an exclusive sense the faith of the Japanese Samurai, it is misleading, for the bulk of the warrior class belonged to other Buddhist sects or were Shintoists. The book, unfortunately, has no index, a lack that is not compensated for by the careful table of contents and the clear paragraph headings. The volume is to be welcomed as a distinct contribution to thought in a field of mental activity which needs ploughing just at present.
