A New Biography of Girard

The article discusses books and authors. A good biography of American philanthropist Stephen Girard would certainly be an addition to American historical literature. In "The Life and Times of Stephen Girard, Mariner and Merchant," author John Bach McMaster has felt the need and explored the immense body of manuscript material which somehow has been submitted to his use. He does not tell where this material is nor indicate how other scholars might gain access to it. That it is particularly full and covers pretty closely the commercial and economic relations of two very critical periods of American history, the Revolution and the War of 1812, is made evident on almost every page of this work.
