This article focuses on the book "Kipling the Story Writer," by Walter Morris Hart. There are many reasons for the decline of Kipling's literary reputation, which dates from the turn of the century and the Boer War. English liberals, such as G.K. Chesterton, persistently disparage his work because they dislike his politics. His scorn for "the flannelled fools at the wicket and the muddied oafs at the goals" set the sportsmen against him. In this country, his criticism of Americans has made him anything but popular.
