With Islam gradually lapsing from the offensive into the defensive and an Arabian movement against Turkish rule gaining in strength, the beginning of the period recently entered was marked, therefore, not so much by the revival as by the birth of national longings. These longings culminated, as already stated, in the desire to establish an Arabian Empire, geographically conceived on the lines of the dependency between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf that French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte had in mind when meditating Eastern conquest and dominion.
