The article discusses about the publishing of three volumes of the book "Writings" by Albert Gallatin and edited by Henry Adams. At the time these volumes aroused no great attention even among the then small number of workers in American history. A small circle of students might recall a volume issued in 1871 entitled "Chapters of Erie, and Other Essay," in which four essays on history and finance by Henry Adams formed the "other Essays." Returning from London at the age of thirty, Adams had done some newspaper work and had been assistant professor of history in Harvard University from 1870 to 1877.
