The article discusses about cycle of appointments from the first American Consul-General to Japan to the present American Ambassador to Japan. Townsend Harris was appointed as Consul-General by the U.S. President Franklin Pierce in 1855. He arrived at Shimoda on August 21, 1856; and there on September 4, he hoisted over the Consulate the "Stars and Stripes" -- the "first consular flag" ever seen in Japan. It was on November 30, 1856 that Harris, having carried the U.S. flag all that way, set foot in Yedo.
