This article focuses on ancient tragedy. "Euripides is going to have his day," said Bernard Shaw some years ago; "he will have a greater audience than ever before." New York has lately come to the same belief. Whether the Americans are in revolt against the flimsy theatrical offerings of the season, or whether serious times breed serious tastes, the public has accorded honorable welcome to "Electra," "Medea," and "Iphigenia." The Japanese stopped short, satisfied with appeal of the Noh to the very few, and never grew to the universal splendor of the Greek. From the beginning the Japanese Noh has been performed by a class apart from the professional theatre.
