This article presents information about the book "The Jewish Communal Register of New York City, 1917-1918." The Jewish population of New York City represents by far the largest Jewish community in the world; it is nearly five times as large as the second largest Jewish community, which is that of Warsaw, the capital of Poland. The earliest Jewish settlers of New York, who escaped from the Spanish inquisition in Central and South America were followed in the 19th century by Jewish immigrants from Germany. The book reflects the innumerable lines of cleavage which have been created by the social and cultural upheavals on the other side of the water.
