This article focuses on the books "Camp Fires in the Yukon," written by Harry A. Auer, "In the Oregon Country," written by George Palmer Putnam, "Spanish Mission Churches of New Mexico," written by L. Bradford Prince, "Stately Homes of California," written by Porter Garnett and "Life Diary and Letters of Oscar Lovell Shafter," edited by Flora Haines Loughead. The most interesting section of the book written by Putnam is that in which he relates, as an eye-witness, how central Oregom, "the greatest raliroadless land," suddenly became blessed with two railways, owing to a duel between rival systems. The book on Oscar Lovell Shatter, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California in 1864-1868, is chiefly a family document, but the letters of Shafter are of general interest.
