Persons unacquainted with the inner life of San Francisco may often have wondered how it is that so flagrant a miscarriage of justice. San Francisco is not a frontier town. It is a civilized community. Some light upon this perplexing subject is shed by the report of J. B. Densmore, a representative of the Federal Department of Labor, who installed a dictaphone last September in the private offices of Charles M. Fickert, the district attorney. Densmore's transcripts do not so much raise a doubt of Fickert's conduct of the bomb cases as bring up questions regarding his habitual conduct in all cases where the right kind of pressure was brought to bear upon him.
