Abstract

The Fourth of July Oration

Tupper, Frederick | July 6, 1918 issue

This article focuses on a collection of Fourth of July orations pronounced by Massachusetts men of note during the third decade of the last century. Large and usually accurate knowledge of earliest American history is happily combined with a sound understanding of the principles of democratic government and the revolutionary past is always linked with the world of contemporary thought and action. These stately old orators speak as patriots, not as partisans. If the old Fourth of July speaker displays all the ardent qualities of an intense nationalism, his view is often distorted by the limitations of his perspective.
