On the occasion, when links with the days of journalist E.L. Godkin and Wendell Phillips Garrison are especially cherished, it is fitting to commemorate the services of two devoted employees of the Nation, who, more fortunate than the present editors, remember the old regime and were trained to its precepts. Both were associated more particularly with Garrison, whose fine considerateness and conscience and loyalty they still vividly reflect. In James Hamilton and Howard Anderson the Nation has a strong anchor to windward. The Nation is glad to bear witness to the rare qualities of both men, and trusts that for many a year they may continue to perpetuate in this office the personality of Garrison, who was in every way a most powerful influence in their lives.
