To anybody who is not familiar with the galleries of the U.S., the present exhibition of the National Academy of Design must prove something of a surprise and a disappointment. The Academy is a venerable institution for the U.S. This is its ninety-third exhibition. It is the only society of artists of the kind in the country. Painters and sculptors who are among the most interesting exhibitors in Philadelphia: Alden Weir, McLure Hamilton, Wayman Adams, William M. Paxton and Adolphe Borie, have no place at all in New York.
