The article focuses on the book "The Romance of Escapes: Studies of Some Historic Flights With a Personal Commentary," by Tighe Hopkins. Of stories of escape told by the chief performers, Hopkins is somewhat skeptical till they have passed the acid test of historical criticism; and the term "romance" in the title of his book is evidently used in its broadest sense, to cover whatever is picturesque and stirring in the recital, regardless of its absolute consonance with established facts. Escapes have always been rare, and from many of those which suggest romance the glamour is dispelled by dispassionate examination.
