The article focuses on the book "Official Letter Books of W.C. Claiborne, 1801-1816," edited by Dunbar Rowland. The book was enabled to play a large part on the national stage in the first two decades of the last century. Claiborne was the first Governor of the Territory of Mississippi, the recipient of the surrender of Louisiana from Laussat in the historic December of 1803 and character. He gives the impression of a man able to push himself to the front and seize a responsible position there, well-meaning and earnest in occupying it, but unmistakably clumsy in its exercise.
